Prague Castle
Prague Castle is one of the biggest castles in the world (according to Guinness Book of Records the biggest ancient castle).
Prague Castle is a must for all visitors to Prague. It is the largest ancient castle in the world (570 m long, on average 128 m wide, area 7.28 hectares). Prague Castle is the most popular sight visited in Prague. At Prague Castle (Czech: Pražský hrad) the Czech kings, Holy Roman Emperors and presidents of the Czech Republic (and Czechoslovakia) have had their offices. Today Prague Castle, besides the seat of the head of state, is also an important cultural and historical monument.

On the basis of archaeological research and the oldest written sources it is thought that Prague Castle was founded around the year 880 by Prince Borivoj of the house of Premyslides. The castle transformed itself from a wooden fortress surrounded by earthen bulwarks to the imposing form it has today. Rulers made their own additions so there is a mixture of styles. Prague castle has had four major reconstructions, but it keeps its classical facelift it took on in the 18 century during the reign of Maria Theresa.
The Prague Castle complex, seat of Czech kings throughout the ages, comprises many buildings, including the Gothic Saint Vitus Cathedral (Prague's most recognisable landmark), several palaces, a monastery, museums & galleries, viewing towers, St. George's Basilica and the enchanting Golden Lane ( a small picturesque street with colorful wooden houses )

The castle has 3 main entrances - the old castle steps to the east, the Powder Bridge to the north and the western gate where the changing of the guard can be seen hourly from 5:00-23:00 or 24:00. Best time is at noon with there are fanfares and banner exchange. All Prague Castle sights are open daily 9:00-17:00 (Apr-Oct), 9:00-16:00 (Nov-Mar), Prague Castle Gardens daily 10:00-18:00 (Apr-Oct).
