History of PIM

"We wanted to create a traditional city marathon on the same level as those in New York, Berlin, or London. In addition to the full marathon, we wanted to promote a healthy, active life-style among a broader spectrum of people; it was for them that we prepared the non-competitive nine-kilometer and five-kilometer races," said Carlo Capalbo, President of PIM.

Since its inception in 1995, Prague International Marathon has been on a fast track to International acclaim. At the time of its conception, even Capalbo did not realize how great an appeal or large an audience the marathon would have on that first race day or in subsequent years. One thousand five hundred people ran like a huge river through the Czech capital in June 1995 and in 2005 over 4,500 people ran the marathon while another 14,000 ran in the non-competitive runs.

The event is highly regarded by marathoners world-wide for offering one of the most visually stunning courses. In addition, PIM has been ranked internationally as the seventh fastest course in the world and was chosen as one of the top ten marathons in a new book by Italian authors Fausto Narducci, Roberto Quarcetani and Massimo Magnani, entitled "Great Marathon Races Throughout History.

Every year PIM continues to add to the opportunities for runners and visitors to enjoy. The non-competitive runs have existed since the start of PIM but they have expanded to include: a Family Run, a City Run, an In-Line Half Marathon, and a Corporate Run. In 1997 the first Junior Marathon Championship was held. In 1999 PIM added the half marathon and the Marathon Music Festival. In 2006 PIM looks forward to offering a competitive In-Line Half Marathon as well as a Corporate Run.
